Wolf & Crown

A wolf howling at the moon, gold bars, diamonds and casino chips — Playtech know this furniture well. I ran Wolf & Crown in demo at a €5.00 total bet, watched the Crown wild double a line, and read the full paytable and progressive ladder off the info panel.

THE FULL REVIEW

Seven stops around the ride — what it is, how it plays, and where the money really moves.

1 Moonlight, wolves and a pile of casino chips

Wolf & Crown opens on a deep-red night sky with a howling-wolf logo against a full moon. The reels mix diamonds, gold bars, purple chips and cash stacks with painted A-K-Q-J-10-9 royals, and a flaming red wolf stalks the middle reels. It's the animals / wolf / luxury theme, done with Playtech's usual clean polish — nothing surprising, nothing sloppy.

2 A 5×3 board with a progressive header

The grid is five reels by three rows, paying on lines, and the thing your eye goes to first is the jackpot header: PROGRESSIVE, GRAND, MINOR and MINI. In my session the GRAND showed 2,250, MINOR 500 and MINI 50 (cash at €5.00 total bet), with the red PROGRESSIVE ticking away up top. The banner spells the big one out plainly: 5 WILDs on a pay line wins GRAND.

3 The Crown wild — and why it doubles

The Crown is the wild, and it's the best part of the game. It substitutes for everything except the horseshoe scatter, and any win containing a wild is doubled (×2). I watched a blue wolf blaze across the reels and turn a line into a €12.50 hit at ×2 — the fire-framed ×2 splashing over the reels is a genuinely satisfying little moment. Wilds also drive the jackpot ladder: five on a line pays GRAND, four pays MINOR, three pays MINI.

4 The Red Wolf and the horseshoe scatter

Two symbols carry extra weight. The Red Wolf is the top-paying symbol and doubles as a jackpot trigger — five scattered Red Wolves (with no wild helping) award the progressive, four a minor tier, three a mini; a blue wolf can even turn red at the end of a spin. The Horseshoe is the scatter: three or more trigger 15 free games, and it pays on its own at up to 400× total bet for five. That's the route to the 1,500x ceiling.

5 The maths, and the light RTP

The honest numbers: 95.93% RTP, High variance and a 1,500x max win. The RTP sits a shade under the average I'd want, and a chunk of the theoretical return is tied up in the progressive jackpots — which means the base game feels leaner than the win-doubling wild first suggests. It's a nicely built slot; just go in knowing the house edge here is a touch firmer than most.

The house rules, plainly

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Grid & wins. 5×3 grid paying on lines. Wins are formed by matching symbols along a pay line.
  2. Crown = Wild. The Crown substitutes for all symbols except the Horseshoe scatter. Any winning combination that includes a wild is doubled (×2).
  3. Red Wolf. The top-paying symbol and a jackpot trigger: 5 scattered Red Wolves (no wild sub) award the progressive, 4 a MINOR tier, 3 a MINI. A blue wolf can turn into a Red Wolf at the end of a spin.
  4. Horseshoe = Scatter & Free Games. The Horseshoe pays scattered (up to 400× total bet for five) and 3 or more trigger 15 Free Games.
  5. Progressive jackpots. Four tiers sit in the header (PROGRESSIVE / GRAND / MINOR / MINI). 5 WILDs on a pay line win the GRAND; 4 the MINOR; 3 the MINI.

Read live from the in-game info panel on the 'PLAYING FOR FUN' demo at a €5.00 total bet, then divided by the €5.00 stake to express payouts as × total bet. 5/4/3/2 = number of matching symbols. The gold-nugget 3-of value was slightly blurry (~0.75×). A MAJOR/PROGRESSIVE tier exists but its exact trigger line was not fully legible.

HOW I PLAYED IT

Demo first, at a €5.00 total bet on the 'PLAYING FOR FUN' build. Two frames straight off my screen: the reels dropping in with two Crown wilds stacked on the right, and the win that followed.

The 5×3 board dropping in with two Crown WILDs stacked on reels 4 and 5, gold bars and a diamond above — the header showing GRAND 2,250, MINOR 500, MINI 50 at a €5.00 total bet, and the banner: 5 WILDs on a pay line win GRAND.

The honest tally: a blue wolf blazed a line and the Crown wild's ×2 stamped over the reels for a €12.50 hit on my €5.00 spin — a clean two-and-a-half-times-stake win, nicely dressed. No jackpot, no free games in this short run, but the win-doubling wild is exactly the moment the game is built around, and it delivers. On a 95.93% RTP I'd keep the sessions short and let the horseshoe do the heavy lifting. — Tess

The token verdict
THE VERDICT
7.6
Seven and a half under a full moon

What earns its ticket

  • Crown wild doubles every win it joins — a genuinely satisfying feature
  • Four-tier progressive ladder with a clear 5-WILDs-win-GRAND trigger
  • Horseshoe scatter pays up to 400× and hands out 15 free games
  • Clean, polished Playtech presentation and readable info panel

What to watch

  • 95.93% RTP sits a touch below average, with return tied up in the progressives
  • Low 1,500x max win for a jackpot slot
  • High variance — a lot of quiet spins between the good ones
  • The wolf / moon / luxury theme is very familiar ground

Seven-point-six because the win-doubling Crown wild is a real pleasure and the build is clean Playtech — and not higher because a 95.93% RTP with jackpot money skimmed off the top leaves the base game leaner than it looks. Short sessions, chase the horseshoe. — Tess Hale

Slot & casino reviewer · Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty

Ex-arcade cashier turned pokies writer. Tess reads a slot the way she used to read a coin-op: what it costs to play, what the machine actually gives back, and whether the “big one” is real or just paint on the glass. Sceptical, warm, allergic to hype.

  • Demo first, always — “the cheapest ticket in the park.”
  • Buys the feature on purpose and prints what it returned — no cherry-picking.
  • Logs the real ladder she hit that session, not the marketing ceiling.
